Alexander (SÁNDOR) BORTNYIK – Cabaret / Circus
signed : BORTNYIK 1926–36
size: 100 x 80 cm
oil on woodboard
Exhibited with this sign at the memorial exhibition of the Hungarian National Gallery Sándor Bortnyik page 44.
The painting was purchased from the wall of the artist's studio through Sothebys' office in Budapest at the time (1980) and has owned one since then. this work is also in. The theme of the painting is the mood of the foreboding of war when the saying about the end of the world in Berlin spread the cabaret.
Typical elements are the cylindrical tailed figure and the clown who brings to life the tragicomic of the situation. Bortnyik lived in the studio of his friend Oskar Schlemmer in Weimar, who dealt with dance, which is felt in the choice of subject for this picture. The colors evoke the age, the geometric elements the world of the Bauhaus and De Stijl, the age when Bortnyik was at the peak of his career.
The central character is the ballerina, who is unlikely to balance in her pointed shoes, the precarious static situation is balanced by the hands. In the representation we see the capture of a tenth of a second of time (at the same time age) when everything can still happen. It has to be decided whether there will be a pirouette or a drive, the following character is already waiting in the background: the clown.
There is a small paper version of the painting in the collection of János Egri.
